Like many other capitals in the world, London has a variety of transport links that allow you to discover the city. Here, we’ll be discussing some advantages and disadvantages of using different methods of transportation. We’ll also give you some tips to keep in mind when planning your trip to London, as well as useful links.

Travelling by foot: walking, running and hopping around London is certainly the way that we’ll be advocating on London in Photos! Living in London, you come to realise that Central London (a.k.a. Zone 1) where you will find the majority of tourist destinations, such as Buckingham Palace, Tower of London and Kensington Gardens, is actually relatively small. If you have time, consider planning some walking tours of London. It will give you a fantastic opportunity to see London through the eyes of the locals and come across spots that are not necessarily pin pointed in the city guide.

There has been a proliferation of companies that organise walking tours. Of course, you will find tours that are typical – covering standard tourist trails. However, as competition amongst these companies has grown, variety of companies trying carve out a niche for themselves has multiplied as well. There are tours in foreign languages organised by immigrants in their foreign languages targeting the compatriots, tours that are aimed at fans of fiction characters such as Sherlock Holmes and James Bond. You can try your imagination and you will probably find what you are looking for! The weirdest, we have seen was a walking tour that trails public toilets; most of which have been converted to, not without irony, places of gastronomical nature, such as restaurants and bars.

Of course, if you are interested in spending money on something else and are happy to just look around at a pace convenient to you, plan a walking tour yourself! Just mark the places that you want to visit and use an app like Google Maps to help you navigate the streets of London. Make sure that you are not too ambitious with all the walking. Even though, everything is close by, it could take a while so check out the distance or time estimate on the app that your use. A very easy and wonderful walking tour is one along the south of the River Thames. You will be able to take beautiful panoramic pictures of London from the ground, in particular get a proper look at Houses of Parliament and Tower of London and St Paul’s Cathedral, or panoramic views from the sky by visiting The Shard or London Eye. South of the river has been in the redevelopment stages for a few years and there are plenty of restaurants there, as well as galleries and theatres. Shakespeare’ The Globe Theatre, Tate Modern and OXO Tower are all on that walk along the river Thames.

Our second favourite mode of transportation is by the red London bus! You still have the benefit of looking at London and taking photos through the large windows but spending considerably less energy.There are many bus stops and many excellent routes that enable you to travel anywhere. Travelling by bus will be most useful to you at night too when the tube is closed. At each bus stop you will find information about the routes that the bus stop serves. However, London suffers from traffic and the times mentioned should be treated as approximate only.

Travelling by tube is a quick and sure way to get across the city. At first, travelling on the London underground can be quite confusing. The same platform usually serves several lines: a little bit like a train platform. However, everything is very clearly labelled and once you have figured it out, it’s going to become a sure companion through your stay in London. You can have a look and print off the tube map online. You will also find printed versions in every tube station.

National rail has an excellent web of connections to outer city and smaller towns, such as Windsor.

If you are planning on using buses, trains or tube, it is advisable that you buy an Oyster Card when you arrive here. It is a plastic card that is used to pay for your trips on public transport. You can either chose to pay as you go, or buying a travel card that gives you unlimited travel for a period of time, such as a week. Oyster Card will significantly reduce the bill that buying paper tickets. Compare your prices and plan your trip through the TFL website.

London has also seen bikes installed a few years bike and very much like in Paris you can hire a bike. Travel the city at leisure and stop to take photos, get a picnic in the park and carry on riding. Bikes look a little bit heavy and London is still working on creating bike lanes, so make sure that you are confident bike rider before setting off on those.

As you may know, London has Thames flowing through it’s City centre and quite a few ferries travel up and down during the day. You can use a ferry to travel to Greenwich, which is a beautiful part of London to the South East. Like walking along the bank, you will be able to take wonderful panoramic photos of London and explore it through a different medium. There are also a few ferries with a twist that organise ferry ride with a guide or boats that open late at night for a party.

Of course, last but not least, there are those famous Black cabs that you can flag down, as well as other taxi companies that operate throughout the city.
