The owners claimed they were launching a celebration of the women of the East End, but provoked widespread anger when it ended up being dedicated to the notorious murderer instead.

Instead of a museum dedicated to the women as they lived and seen ‘through their eyes’, we have a museum filled with anachronism and waxwork corpses.

Since it was opened in July 2016 the museum has been repeatedly targeted by vandals, with red paint being thrown on the shutters, etc. As a result of Jack the Ripper Museum protest, the museum's staff was physically attacked, pelted with eggs, harassed and sworn at. All these incidents were reported to the police.

One of the first things to greet you on arriving at London’s new Jack the Ripper Museum is a continually looping soundtrack of women screaming.

Upstairs, a ghoulish waxwork of Catherine Eddowes – the Ripper’s fourth victim, murdered in 1888 – sits in an otherwise empty room.

Each victim – whether one of the canonical five or the eleven women held in the 'Whitechapel Murders' case file - have their own story, families, friends and lives before their horrifying death. Some even have living descendants.
